River Surfing

Associations

[RSAs]

This is a critical time in river surfing history. There are more eyes on the sport than ever before.  Pioneers worldwide have uncovered amazing waves.  Innovators have built beautiful creations for us to surf. Even industry is starting to take notice, sponsor athletes and see how their products work in the river.  But without community influence river surfing can quickly lose the things we love so much about the sport. River surfing associations are created to maintain a positive environment at the wave, develop the sport and safety and play a critical role in wave building.

What is an RSA?
At its most basic level river surfing begins with a surf club. A group of individuals who surf together and more than likely hang out socially outside of surfing together. There is no one leader and everyone influences the group the same. This happens naturally and is a beautiful thing. Over time the group grows in size and sooner or later they are faced with conflict or desire. There could be a major injury or the group could unite to want to build new and better surf waves.

Our recommended model is that of a registered River Surfing Association. RSAs are a living societal organism that unite river surfers across the globe. Still in their infancy there still exists a disconnect between each organization but by registering an RSA you are signing up to share information and resources with other RSAs and with each new community strengthening those ties we grow stronger as a unit. The communities with more experience share their knowledge with the newer communities. Mistakes are made less. Good values are passed on. Our unique culture as river surfers is woven from the fabric of many different people from many different backgrounds.

First Steps

RSAs in the beginning identify surfers in the area with or without a wave to surf on. Surfers live in every city on the planet. We picked it up on a holiday to Hawaii or backpacking in Australia. We saw it as a kid on tv and imagined how cool it would be to ride waves. When we return home from finally trying it we bring back with us a surf lifestyle. Surfers are a mellow people who enjoy the same genres of music and atmosphere. Even without a wave if you host a surf party in your city and find a way to get the invitation to these “closet surfers” relationships form fast.

Ways to pull out surfers in your city:

1. Surf Art
Hit google and look for surf photographers, painters, or videographers.  Anyone who has a love for the ocean and surf waves.

2. University Clubs
There is a lot of crossover between board sports. Usually a snowboard club will have lots of people who love surfing. Think about collaborating on an event like a surf movie night or beach party.

3. SUP
In an area that has no surf waves one of the closest activities that surfers identify with is SUP. Organize a SUP hangout at a nearby lake or slow moving river.  Even if you have to rent a board to do it.

4. City Involvement
Wave building can start with one person. Making city contacts and getting to talk to the right person can lead to the possibility of a wave being built in your city.  Simple river wave projects can work out to be the same price as a playground in terms of municipal budgets.  It doesn’t require a facebook page with 10,000 likes it can be done with one person. Get the project going and rise the community up with that as your base.
